"Demi Lovato is a true performer. As if her music wasn't enough to impress critics, she proves in 'Princess Protection Program' how funny, dramatic and truly entertaining she can be."

On June 30, the Disney Channel released the original movie "Princess Protection Program" (Royal BFF Extended Edition) on DVD. It marks the second time real-life friends Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato have starred on screen together (their first television appearance was on the set of "Barney & Friends," where the two met in 1999).
The genuine chemistry between Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato makes their performances both on screen and in their music video for the duet "One and the Same" look effortless and natural.
Gomez, who currently stars as Alex Russo on "Wizards of Waverly Place," plays Carter (AKA "bait girl"), a tomboy whose father rescues princesses from danger. Like the "Wizards" role, her "Princess" character shares the same trademark sarcasm and stubbornness that has made Selena Gomez a household name.
Lovato, on the other hand, has the more difficult role of becoming a modern Disney princess. Despite the acting challenges of proper posture and enunciation, she ultimately delivers a performance as "Rosie" that is truly comical. The only distraction was a line, which felt a little rushed, in which she says, "The queen of homecoming? What is this homecoming? ….We have no such thing where I am from." Regardless of the pacing of dialogue in that particular scene, it takes a very critical eye to find fault with Lovato's overall performance. (After reviewing the clip again, it is almost not worth mentioning.)
The fact is Demi Lovato belongs on screen as much as she does on the radio. It may have taken appearances in videos with Selena Gomez on YouTube to prove her star power to audiences, but now that she has a thriving music and acting career and millions of fans around the world, there is no question she has the drive and determination to have staying power in the entertainment industry. In fact, on July 21, she will release her second, highly anticipated album on Hollywood records.
Whether they are crashing a high school prom, as the girls recently did in Toronto (the city that hosted the world premiere of their movie) or teaming up on YouTube to make videos for their fans, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato are two talented young stars who are ruling their own entertainment kingdoms and proving that together they are worthy of the Disney crown.
Directed by Allison Liddi-Brown, "Princess Protection Program" is now available on DVD. Selena Gomez can be seen each week in "Wizards of Waverly Place," and Demi Lovato stars in "Sonny with a Chance" on the Disney Channel.
